At HAI Group, culture isn’t a tagline—it’s something employees shape and experience every day. That commitment was recognized again this year as the organization received eight 2025 Energage Culture Excellence Awards, based entirely on employee feedback collected through the Energage Top Workplaces survey.
These awards build on a long-standing record of recognition. HAI Group has been named a Top Workplace in Connecticut every year since 2020 and a national Top Workplace three times since 2022 (most recently in 2025).
Since 2021, the organization has earned 29 Energage Culture Excellence awards across various areas, including professional development, work-life flexibility, leadership, innovation, purpose and values, and employee appreciation, affirming a culture rooted in trust, care, and continuous improvement.
Action and accountability influence everything from leadership decisions to daily interactions. As CEO and President Ed Malaspina put it: “We do what we say we’re going to do.” That mindset shapes how employees approach their work and how leaders make decisions, with transparency and trust at every level.
It is evident in how departments collaborate, how ideas are shared, and how challenges are addressed with practical, solution-oriented thinking. It’s reflected in companywide initiatives that prioritize the needs of policyholders and employees, as well as in everyday moments when employees take ownership of their work and help their colleagues succeed.
Behind the scenes, HAI Group’s Human Resources team continues to build employee-centric programs that promote balance, flexibility, and well-being.
“We put a lot of thought into how our benefits meet the needs of employees at different stages of life,” said James Mullen, Director of Human Resources. “Whether it’s parental leave, tuition reimbursement, or retirement planning, we want our programs to make sense for where people are in their careers and their lives.”
Flexibility remains a defining feature of the employee experience, says Amy Galvin, Chief Governance and Human Resources Officer.
“Our policies are built on trust and understanding,” Galvin said. “Like if someone needs to work from home temporarily, we find a way to make it happen. We know that when employees can handle what’s important outside of work, they bring their best selves to work.”
Professional development is another example of HAI Group’s commitment to its people. Growth is supported at every level, whether that means earning an insurance license, enrolling in department-specific courses, attending an in-person or virtual conference, or accessing company-paid LinkedIn Learning.
HAI Group also invests in higher education, offering tuition support for employees pursuing degrees or certificate programs, and a student loan repayment program that helps reduce financial stress for those managing existing student loans.
Leadership coaching, mentoring, and specialized training further encourage long-term career development.
“Professional development is consistently one of our highest-rated areas in employee surveys,” said Mullen. “It’s one of the many ways we invest in our people and strengthen the organization.”
Feedback from new and recently onboarded employees often highlights the same themes: support, collaboration, and a genuine sense of care. Employees describe a culture where people are approachable, leaders are accessible, and the work environment reflects a commitment to well-being and shared purpose.
One recently hired employee noted how quickly they felt included:
“From the moment I read the website to now, working day to day, the level of support and genuine care for employees has been unwavering. Everyone is kind, helpful, and willing to lend a hand.”
Another new employee pointed to the sense of community and mission alignment:
“You feel it everywhere—in how staff work together, through food drives and fundraisers, and in the trust members have in HAI Group. There’s a true open-door policy where ideas are heard and respected.”
Across tenure and roles, employees describe HAI Group as a place where they feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute.
For Malaspina, the recognition is meaningful, but the behavior behind it matters most.
“It’s employees doing the right thing at the right time, even when no one’s watching,” he said. “That’s what makes me proud.”
Every employee at HAI Group contributes to a shared purpose built on trust, collaboration, and service to policyholders. Whether solving challenges, mentoring a colleague, or strengthening support for housing organizations, employees bring integrity and care to everything they do.
It’s this shared commitment that continues to make HAI Group a workplace where people are proud to learn, grow, and build meaningful careers.
