Over its 75-year history, Plattsburgh Housing Authority has grown by looking beyond the traditional boundaries of a housing authority. Its evolving approach is featured in “Diversified by Design,” an article in the Summer 2026 issue of Affordable Housing News.
The article explores how Plattsburgh has expanded its portfolio, developed new sources of revenue, and formed partnerships to address needs throughout Clinton County, New York. Since 2017, the organization has grown from approximately 790 units to about 1,000 units under management, while its assets under management have increased from $16 million to approximately $60 million over the past decade.
That growth has allowed Plattsburgh to respond in new ways when community needs arise. Through its nonprofit arm, for example, the organization acquired a duplex that local social services officials can use to house families who otherwise might be placed in hotels or motels. The organization is also exploring partnerships to support survivors of domestic violence and individuals with physical disabilities.
As its portfolio and responsibilities have expanded, Plattsburgh has remained mindful of staff capacity and professional development. The organization uses the HAI Group Housing Training Institute to support new-employee onboarding, provide updated safety education, and give employees access to training created specifically for housing professionals.
“We pride ourselves on customer service,” said Kristina Tatroe, director of the HAI Group Housing Training Institute. “Our customer success specialists work with the housing authorities and affordable housing providers and understand what their needs are, and then they really offer a concierge level of service.”
